A place
in the sun:
window seats
— a trend explained

It's early morning. The first rays of the sun have found their way to you as you settle comfortably by the window. The world outside turns into a stage, the window transforms into a refuge for short breaks and quiet thoughts. A window with a sill so wide that you can sit on it is known in interior design as a sitting window. What is so special about this retreat and how does it work? Ideas and information from our Interior Design department for private living.

Yearning for a Slowdown

Retreat with a view

Our times are busy and demanding, and there is a great longing for spaces offering peace and quiet. A sitting window satisfies this desire, creating a connection to the world outside while you remain in the safety of your own living area.

Whether it's used as a reading corner, for a cup of coffee when it rains outside or just to enjoy the view — a sitting window can be much more than a design choice. It creates an oasis of peace in the home.

Let's summarise what we've learned so far: Here are our tips and infos on designing the perfect sitting window.

Space & position

Choice of material & convenience

Choose upholstery and cushions which emphasise the colour scheme of the interior and enhance a feeling of cosiness. Natural fabrics and subtle colours create a calming ambience.

Decoration & functionality

A small bookshelf, some plants or a modest coffee table make sure the seating window is both practical and stylish.

Useful benefits & Challenges

On one hand, sitting windows make for a cosy feeling. On the other hand, they broaden the possibilities for room planning by upgrading unused corners.

However, be aware of important technical aspects: Proper insulation is crucial to create an inviting space on cold days. Moreover, the height of the window sill must not obstruct the view.

Dimensions & safety aspects

The width of a window sill should be at least 40 cm if it is supposed for sitting on it.

However, we recommend a seat depth of around 60 cm for a lounging area. When choosing a window, it is best to opt for fixed glazed elements with safety glass. They minimise the risk of injury and create a seamless glass surface that is visually appealing.

A wide range of uses

Sitzfenster finden in nahezu jedem Raum ihren Platz:

  • The home office: A view of the outdoors boosts motivation and well-being.
  • The bedroom: Here, the seating window becomes a retreat for relaxing moments and dreams.
  • The kid's room: A multifunctional reading corner or storage space — there are no limits to the imagination here.
  • The living/dining area: An inviting place to lounge, chat and enjoy, while light floods the room.

How to: Plan & implement

Sitting windows can be produced in various ways - whether as an integral part of the architecture or as a modification of existing spaces.

The options range from custom-made pieces of furniture to cleverly designed recesses. Make sure that the seating cover is comfortable and that the window can be opened at any time.
