Münchner Stoff Frühling 2023

THE FABRIC OF GREAT STORIES

Caressing, stroking, pampering. Inspiring, challenging, soothing – the fabrics in our homes are true all-round talents, and are available in infinite variations. At the Münchner Stoff Frühling 2023, the best producers in the industry present their new collections each year. A highlight for our trend team: after all, we’ve always been passionate about using fabrics to help design spaces.

One product of the zeitgeist is a megatrend in the fabric sector, a term coined by futurologist Matthias Horx and his team. Megatrends aren’t going anywhere; they’re here to stay and reflect a change that can be seen across the board.

TREND: A SECOND GLANCE

Unlike ever before, textile technology today is focusing on the “inner values” of fabrics. How is a yarn structured? Is it a single thread, or different-coloured fibres spun together to create yarn?

Various combinations of materials result in new effects, create a delicate shimmer or a dry, smooth feel. Alternating thicknesses of yarn open up a whole new playing field. And we haven’t even touched on the finishing of the fabrics, which is responsible for the haptics (feel) and the functionality of the fabrics.

TREND: LOVELY LOOPS

A prime example for this trend is bouclé. It’s long since shaken off its “aunty” character and now has a laid-back feel.

What’s more, loops and knots make it possible to achieve incredibly interesting effects. They give fabric a third dimension. Bouclé is always pleasant to the touch and causes an irresistible urge to stroke it. It is also in line with the trend of soft, curvy shapes in furniture and sofas.

TREND: BLURRED BOUNDARIES

Crossovers fit with our attitude to life. We’re giving up old habits, trying out new things and want our living environment to also reflect our individual personality. Living spaces often lose their clear purpose, and for furniture and fabrics, this goes without saying.

As a result, boundaries and conventions are disappearing, especially between indoors and outdoors – giving bouclé a breath of fresh air on outdoor sofas. Modern textile technologies make this possible.

TREND: THE THIRD DIMENSION

Bouclé also represents another trend: three-dimensionality, which can also be observed in other fabric qualities.

For example, when monochromatic velour fabrics feature wide matte or glossy strips or are worked in graphic motifs with an embossing technique. In addition, nowadays almost every fabric is also available in a quilted version.

TREND: DRAMATIC FLOORS

We’re lowering our gazes. Because carpets have taken on a life of their own. While for years, it was considered that carpets should be discreet and above all practical, now interior designers are shining a spotlight on them once again.

Individual shapes and formats and large-scale designs that tell a story meet carpets with fur optics that might just be a worthy competitor for sofas.
